The Appellate Division of the Office of Public Defense Services is comprised
of appellate specialists who regularly appear before the Oregon Court of Appeals
and the Oregon Supreme Court, representing financially eligible individuals in criminal and parole cases.
The office engages in one of the most intensive and demanding appellate practices
in the state. Like their counterparts in the Solicitor General's Office of the Oregon
Department of Justice, the attorneys in the Appellate Division represent their
clients with extraordinary skill and zeal in the state's highest courts and
contribute directly to the rational development of Oregon's criminal laws and
procedures. As a result, the Appellate Division is committed to recruiting,
training, supervising, and retaining highly skilled appellate lawyers who will
continue to develop one of the finest appellate practices in Oregon.
The Appellate Division employs the following attorney classifications:
SENIOR DEPUTY PUBLIC DEFENDER
A Senior Deputy Public Defender is an accomplished appellate criminal defense attorney. The caseload is comprised of direct appeals in moderate to
extremely complex felony cases, and an attorney in this position is also responsible for directly supervising a team of five or six entry-level and intermediate-level attorneys.
DEPUTY PUBLIC DEFENDER 2
An attorney in this position has demonstrably strong aptitudes and interests in legal research, analysis and writing, and significant appellate criminal law experience. The caseload is comprised of direct
appeals in simple to moderately complex felony cases.
DEPUTY PUBLIC DEFENDER 1
This is an entry-level position with a caseload comprised of misdemeanor, simple felony, and parole appeals. An attorney in this position has a genuine interest in criminal defense and a strong desire to develop the research, analytic and writing skills of an accomplished appellate specialist.
